I had the radio on and one of my '80s favorites, Bananarama's "Cruel Summer" rang true, especially that bit about the air being "heavy and dry." For so many, Covid 19 has made for a sad vacation season.
Then I heard the UK band Mungo Jerry and their 1970 hit, "In the Summertime," which is now (gasp!) 50 years old. I'll never understand the appeal or chart success of that annoying record. How about the irresponsibility of the line, "if her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal/if her daddy's poor, just do what you feel"? Not one of the better moments in rock history, unlike Billy Stewart's galloping version of Gershwin's "Summertime." Now that's a record!
